This morning, the Pirates signed veteran infielder Jayson Nix. He was released by the Rays on August 1, allowing the Pirates to pick him up. Nix will be active for today's game against the Dbacks. Dean Anna has been designated for assignment to make room for Nix on the roster.
Nix has been with seven different teams in his seven year Major League career. Spending time with the Blue Jays, Indians, Phillies, Rockies, Rays, White Sox and Yankees. He primarily plays 3B, SS and 2B but has played many positions, as he has commonly been used as a utility guy.
A career .216 hitter, with a .288 OBP and .354 slugging percentage. His addition will hardly secure the Pirates a playoff spot or even win them a game. Although he is coming off the two best years of his career in 2011 and '12. However, he has struggled this year in just 18 games played with a .154 avg.
Nix will probably be used at third base temporarily, until Marte returns which will allow Harrison to leave the outfield and hold down the position. Brent Morel has been sent down to AAA Indianapolis following the move. #NOMOREMOREL
