The Pirates were able to bounce back and tie the series up behind what turned out to be a great start from Jeff Locke and a big night at the plate once again for Josh Harrison.
Locke was shaky early on, giving up 3 runs in his first two innings of work. After that he was Locked in, retiring the last 13 batters he faced. The final line on Locke: 7 IP, 6 H, 3 runs, all earned, 7 strikeouts and most importantly...no walks. Locke did give up a big fly to Christian Yelich, he still can't seem to get away from those home runs. Locke was able to earn the win for his performance tonight and move to (3-3) on the year thanks to some run support from the Pirates offense. Opposing him tonight was Tom Koehler for the Fish. He also got off to a poor start, looking like he wasn't gonna be able to make it out of the first inning at one point. He also settled in, the Pirates did not score again until they got to the Marlins bullpen, Koehler took the loss for the Fish.
Miami got on the board in the first after Hechavarria singled, Locke then struck out Stanton before McGehee hit a line drive single off of Ike Davis' glove. A ground ball by Baker took Mercer deep in the hole and allowed Hechavarria to score and make it 1-0 Miami.
Harrison extended his hit streak to 10 games with a leadoff double in the bottom half of the first. Polanco then walked, Koehler loaded the bases for the Bucs after walking Martin. Ike Davis, yes, Ike Davis then came to the plate and hit a 2 RBI ground rule double to put the Bucs ahead 2-1. Travis Snider then scored Martin with a ground ball to the right side, 3-1 Buccos. With 2 outs, Jordy Mercer came up with a big hit, singling to drive in Davis and give the Pirates a 3 run lead. The Pirates net 8 to the plate for 4 runs in the inning.
In the 2nd, the Marlins answered back. Mathias (career .195 hitter) signaled, he was sacrificed over. Then, the ever annoying Christian Yelich hit a bomb to the old Pepsi seats in right. That was Locke's 11th home run given up this year. That made it 4-3 Pirates.
After that Koehler and Locke battled. They both had settled in after that 2nd inning. The game was on cruise control until the 7th.
In the 7th the Pirates put some insurance up on the board. After getting some runners on, Russell Martin came through with a clutch RBI to make it 5-3. Gaby Sanchez then pinch hit for his buddy Ike. He roped a 2 RBI double to put the Pirates up by 4. Gaby and Ike combined for 3 RBIs on the night, who would have thought?
It was Elementary for Watson in the 8th. Made ya realize how much you missed not having him out there last night. It was also angering that up by 4 runs both Watson and Melancon pitched. For me that reassured that we were all #Hurdled last night.
Melancon came on in the 9th. He shut it down for the Bucs. RAISE IT!
With good starting pitching you can win a game with any lineup...
He's been piling them up recently...Josh Harrison is our BUCCO OF THE GAME! JHay was 3-4 and extended his hit streak to 10 games. A round of applause for the usual "black hole" of a platoon, Gaby and Ike. They were a combined 2-3 on the evening with 3 Rbis.
7:05 first pitch tomorrow night. Pirates will turn to Edinson Volquez (8-7, 3.91) for a good one, he will face Brian Flynn (0-0, 6.00).
